What if every electron in the universe was all the same exact particle?
    ...
The one electron universe is, among other things, one of the very few attempts to explain why all electrons are identical. It has its roots in an entirely different form of symmetry between particles, that of an electron and its antimatter counterpart, the positron. The two particles have the same mass, the same spin, the same everything except for its charge. Leaving the charge aside, the electron and the positron are, well, indistinguishable, and in 1940 that gave a Princeton physicist named John Wheeler an idea.

    Wild chimps outwit human hunters
    ...
Across Africa, people often lay snare traps to catch bushmeat, killing or injuring chimps and other wildlife.
But a few chimps living in the rainforests of Guinea have learnt to recognise these snare traps laid by human hunters, researchers have found.
More astonishing, the chimps actively seek out and intentionally deactivate the traps, setting them off without being harmed.

How Mitochondrial Eve connected all humanity and rewrote human evolution
    ...
In most species, including humans, the female egg cells completely destroy the mitochondria in the male sperm cell shortly after fertilization, leaving only the female mitochondria behind. This is where we get the term "Mitochondrial Eve", made popular on shows like the Battlestar Galactica reboot. This individual passed down her mitochondria relatively unchanged to every human alive today, and all females will continue to pass down her mitochondria indefinitely.

By tracing the subtle mutations to mitochondrial DNA that have accumulated over the millennia, we can figure out which groups are most closely related, and ultimately fix the existence of Mitochondrial Eve to a fairly specific time in the past, which is currently estimated at about 200,000 years ago. That pretty much rules out the idea of multiple origins for humanity — otherwise Mitochondrial Eve would have to date back a couple million years, and mitochondrial analysis shows that that simply isn't the case.

It's worth noting that Mitochondrial Eve would not have been exceptional during her own life. She certainly wasn't the only woman alive at the time, merely the only one who can trace descent to everyone alive right now. All the other women alive at the same time as her either left no living descendants or are only related to some smaller subset of the people alive today.

Why ancient shipwrecks are even more important than a Pharaoh’s tomb
The hunt is on for shipwrecks belonging to the Minoans, the ancient culture that ruled the Mediterranean over 3,000 years ago. But these downed ships don't just reveal one culture - they unlock the secrets of vast ancient economies.
    ...
To give you some idea, here's Nature's description of the Ulu Burun shipwreck, a Bronze Age craft dating back to 1300 BCE discovered in 1982:
The vast cargo includes ebony, ivory, ostrich eggs, resin, spices, weapons, jewellery and textiles as well as ingots of copper, tin and glass. But what really stunned archaeologists was that the artefacts on this one vessel came from at least 11 different cultures - from a gold scarab bearing the name of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti to copper from Cyprus and tin from central Asia.

The wreck provided tangible evidence of an astonishing array of contacts and trade between the different cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East in the late Bronze Age. The Ulu Burun ship sailed at around the time that Tutankhamun ruled Egypt, and "it is far more important than Tutankhamun's tomb as a contribution to our understanding of the period", according to Wachsmann. "This goes to the nitty gritty of the world. It's Wall Street in a ship."

Scientists have (probably) made contact with Earth’s most alien lake!

13,000 feet beneath the surface of Antarctica's vast ice sheet rests the otherworldly Lake Vostok. Home to some of the most extreme conditions on Earth, Vostok has remained isolated from the rest of the world for 20 million years, and completely inaccessible to mankind. Until now.
Most fish actually evolved on land, not the sea
    ...
The scientists say we can't be absolutely sure about what happened before that, but we know of some pretty famous examples of sea creatures that got their start in freshwater: dolphins and whales. These mammals most likely evolved from wolf-like creatures that at one point lived mostly, if not exclusively on land before beginning the slow evolutionary transition to a life at sea.

Atrazine is an herbicide marketed by agribusiness company Syngenta. It has been shown to "chemically castrate" frogs, turning males into females that are capable of rearing offspring; it is associated with birth defects, low birth weights, and menstrual problems in humans; and its use has been outright banned by the European Union.
It is also the second-most commonly used herbicide in America.

These Are the Earliest Human Paintings Ever
According to new dating tests, these are the first paintings ever made by humans. They are seals painted more than 42,000 years ago, located in the Cave of Nerja, in Málaga, Spain. And they may change our ideas about humanity's evolution.

A new scientific explanation for how zebras evolved their stripes

    ...
New research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology looked at how differences in skin tone effected the attractiveness of animals to blood-sucking horseflies. They already knew that dark skinned horses tend to get bitten far worse than white, so they wondered if the zebras had evolved stripes as a way of mitigating that.

As an aside, apparently zebra embryos start dark and then grow white stripes, finally solving the whole "white with black stripes" or "black with white stripes" debate.

The bouncy science of toy superballs
    ...
Some portion of your childhood was spent seeing exactly how much damage could be done with a small, light rubberish ball that some probably well-meaning adult gave you in a birthday party gift bag. And it did have to do damage to make it entertaining.
