Apple buying up a quarter of the DRAM market

Avril Wu, the assistant vice president for DRAMeXchange, it seems that they believe that Apple could be buying up as much as 25 per cent of the world’s DRAM supply. This is huge increase from the 16.5 per cent it has already bought. However, this is a somewhat evil strategy from Apple because, while it does ensure it has enough components for their products, it also prevents rivals making products because they will be in short supply and more expensive.

Apple is now the fifth largest PC maker in the world, says IDC
Q3 shipment report shows worldwide PC market contracting slightly

The Wall Street Journal quotes Toni Sacchonaghi, a senior analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., who estimated in January that despite a comparatively low market share of around five or six percent, Macs account for more than 50 percent of the PC industry's profits.

Apple might come up with a cure for the bends

Belgian chemicals company Solvay SA has won a contract to provide plastic for Apple latest smartphone iPhone 6 handsets, Bloomberg said. Solvay will supply polyether ether ketone polymer (PEEK) which is a colourless thermoplastic polymer, which can be sprayed on the internal parts of the iPhone 6 models.

Of course, neither side are talking about what they will be using the polymer for, but PEEK, used in various industries like medical, aerospace and automotive industry. It is popular for its strength and rigidity and is known to withstand high temperatures.

Apple faces Italian tax evasion charges

Italian prosecutors have wrapped up an investigation into allegations US tech giant Apple failed to pay nearly a billion dollars in corporate taxes . Apparently they have enough evidence to ask a judge to charge Apple and begin the long court process.

Editorial: A Note to Apple on Watch Complications -- "You Keep Using That Word..."

Complications are about precision, craftsmanship, and complexity -- the antithesis of how Apple is redefining the term in Watch OS
    ...
For years complications have been a calling card of the premium watch industry. Swiss modernist luxury watchmaker Franck Muller, for instance, markets itself under the slogan "master of complications." Its Aeternitas Mega 4 packs 36 complications -- 25 visible. To make those 36 features, the watch required 1,483 precisely machined and tuned miniature mechanical components. The watch was billed in 2010 as the "most complicated" wristwatch in existence and priced at a cool $2.7M USD.
    ...
Ironically, Apple thinks it knows better than hundreds of years of watchmaking tradition. And not content to merely buck the status quo, it has brazenly redefined the term "complications" in such a way that it's the virtual antithesis of tradition meaning. With Watch OS 2, Apple's ironically redefined "Complications" (widgets on the smart watch face) are set to be positioned more prominently, thanks to Apple's decision to open them up to third party developers.

Apple takes almost all of the smartphone industry's profits
    ...
While these sales figures alone are staggering, what is even more dumbfounding is how much Apple makes off each phone. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, with only 20% of the smartphone market, Apple rakes in over 90% of all the industry profits; among a 1,000 companies in the industry, Cupertino takes almost all the money. That's almost 30% of growth, compared to its share of 65% just last year.

U.S. Antitrust Monitor: Apple Is 'Own Worst Enemy'

Apparently Apple didn't get the memo that said "DO NOT piss off the court-appointed monitor." Or, maybe they did and they just don't care.

Apple Inc's antitrust compliance program has improved, but the company continues to impede a court-appointed monitor overseeing the program, acting as "its own worst enemy," the monitor told a federal judge in a report made public on Tuesday. "In this respect, Apple has been its own worst enemy," he said. "This lack of cooperation has cast an unnecessary shadow over meaningful progress in developing a comprehensive and effective antitrust compliance program."

Apple Execs Face Jail in France after Lawsuit over Slowing Down iPhones

There may be more to worry about than just getting sued if you’re a higher-up at Apple. It would seem that France has legislation that opens up the possibility of prison time for executives of the company.

Sorry Europe Apple $29 battery deal is for English-speakers only

It is impressive how easily Apple shuts up journalists. Jobs' Mob managed to convince the tame Apple Press that it was not evil for throttling old iPhones by dropping the cost of battery replacement – but it seems only English and American Apple fanboys will be given the discount.

Germans, Austrians and other Europeans still have to pay €89 plus €12.10 shipping for a new battery. If you add these two numbers together, you end up with €101.1 Euro for Germans or Austrians to do a battery swap.
