Russia has a plan to compete with SpaceX—but it has a flaw
The Russian plan seems to depend on SpaceX standing still.

As recently as 2013, Russia's venerable fleet of rockets commanded nearly half of the global share of the commercial launch market. Since then, the emergence of other players, most notably SpaceX, has considerably shrunk the once-dominant Russian position.

This year, although Russia has made 17 successful orbital launches, only about a third of them have flown for paying customers other than the Russian government or the International Space Station. By contrast, SpaceX has made 16 launches this year, 11 of which have been for commercial customers. A SpaceX projection for 2018 suggests that disparity will continue to grow if the company continues to increase the flight rate of its Falcon 9 rocket.

Blue Origin is on Track to Launch Their New Glenn Rocket in 2020

The Jeff Bezos space company Blue Origin is getting closer to launching their heavy lift vehicle. They're in the process of creating a specialized launch facility at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for the rocket. All of this means that Space X is going to get some much needed competition and the end result is going to be much reduced launch fees.

What is Zuma? Mystery surrounds the payload SpaceX is launching
This is the company's third national security mission.
    ...
On Thursday, SpaceX will attempt to launch its third and most secretive payload for the military. The mission was not even made public until a launch license was released a month ago, and the company didn't acknowledge the launch until this last week. The payload was developed by Northrup Grumman and has the mysterious name "Zuma," which sounds similar to a carbonated, alcoholic beverage briefly popular in the 1990s, Zima.

China Wants to Build a Nuclear-Powered Space Shuttle by 2040

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation has released a roadmap of ambitious targets related to space technology, science, and applications from 2017 to 2045. One goal is a nuclear-powered space shuttle, alongside other next-generation launch vehicles capable of multiple interplanetary round-trips, exploiting space resources through asteroid mining, and constructing megaprojects such as a space-based solar power station.

"Potentially Hazardous" Asteroid to Skim Earth Just Days before Christmas

A massive asteroid is set to skim the Earth on December 16, just over a week before Christmas. With a diameter of about 3 miles, the asteroid -- named 3200 Phaethon after the Greek demi-god who, according to legend, nearly set the Earth on fire -- is classified as "potentially hazardous" by the Minor Planet Center. Unlike its namesake, however, 3200 Phaethon is unlikely to destroy our planet.

Opportunity Rover Makes it Through its 8th Winter

The Mars rover Opportunity has survived its 8th winter thanks to the Mars rover team using a tilted strategy for the rover during the winter months. Basically they make sure the rover is always tilted towards the sun and take extra care when in the fall and winter. Further, Opportunity has been on Mars since 2004 and was supposed to only have a mission duration of 90 Martian days. However, thanks to outstanding NASA engineers this rover is still going strong almost 14 years later and providing excellent science along the way. Opportunity is one tough robot.

Russia Says Satellite Launch Failure Due to Programming Error

Russia has lost a $45 million satellite, the Meteor-M, because someone put in the wrong coordinates. In what is being called an "embarrassing programming error," the rocket carrying the satellite thought it was launching from Baikonur instead of Vostochny cosmodrome.

A Chinese space station is falling to Earth next year — but it’s the last thing to worry about
    ...
The space station wasn’t really meant to last past 2013, but China decided to extend its lifespan for a couple of years. Then in 2016, the Chinese Space Agency announced it had lost contact and control of the space station. And its orbit has been slowly degrading ever since, meaning it will ultimately make an uncontrolled re-entry. Or in other words: “We don’t know where it’s coming down.”

SpaceX to try and launch the mysterious Zuma satellite again [Updated]
This flight will clear the way for the much anticipated Falcon Heavy flight.
    ...
All that is publicly known about the Zuma payload is that it was manufactured for the US government by Northrop Grumman and bound for low-Earth orbit. One source told Ars that SpaceX is launching the payload for the National Reconnaissance Office, but the NRO has denied that Zuma is its satellite. (But really, would you expect anything less from the spy satellite agency?)

Latest SpaceX Advantage is Auto Self-Destruct

SpaceX has worked with the Air Force to design and deploy a new system that allows their rockets to self-destruct without intervention from a range safety officer. This is an important feature because it will allow rockets to be launched into polar orbit from Cape Canaveral because they won't need to be tracked by radar when launched. Another good reason is that it will allow the rocket more time to make flight corrections before it is destroyed. Finally, SpaceX doesn't need to pay the Air Force for use of personnel and equipment to track the rocket during launch. Overall, this tech will make launches safer and less costly.

NASA Test Proves Pulsars Can Function as a Celestial GPS

In a breakthrough for future deep space exploration, NASA has successfully demonstrated X-ray navigation, a technique that would allow spacecraft to navigate in deep space without human instruction. It’s largely based on pulsars and their beaming of electromagnetic radiation, which can act as cosmic lighthouses.
