Microsoft leads FBI & Interpol coalition to destroy million strong botnet

Discovered in 2011 the Win32/Dorkbot malware has spread to over a million Windows PCs worldwide. During the last six months alone it had been infecting over 100,000 machines a month. Microsoft announced on Wednesday they had teamed up to enact a coordinated malware eradication campaign to disrupt the botnet.

The rise of the Linux botnets

Kaspersky Lab is warning that the Linux botnet is not only a thing but it's a thing on the rise.
The report said that the share of attacks from Linux botnets almost doubled (to 70 per cent) – and Linux bots are the most effective tool for the SYN-DDoS attack method. This is the first time that Kaspersky DDoS Intelligence has registered such an imbalance between the activities of Linux- and Windows-based DDoS bots.

    Someone Attacked America’s Internet
Twitter, Reddit and Spotify were collateral damage in a major online assault

Twitter, Reddit, Github, Spotify, and many others were knocked offline intermittently on Friday morning as a result of a cyberattack on an large internet infrastructure provider.

How an army of vulnerable gadgets took down the web today
Malware known as Mirai is targeting the smart home

At some point this morning, one of the US’s critical internet infrastructure players was hit with a staggering distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that has taken out huge swaths of the web. Sites like Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Reddit, and many others — all clients of a domain registration service provider called Dyn — have suffered crippling interruptions and, in some cases, blanket outages.

University Experiences DDoS Attack From IoT Vending Machines and Light Bulbs

Of the thousands of domains requested, only 15 distinct IP addresses were returned. Four of these IP addresses and close to 100 of the domains appeared in recent indicator lists for an emergent IoT botnet. This botnet spread from device to device by brute forcing default and weak passwords. Once the password was known, the malware had full control of the device and would check in with command infrastructure for updates and change the device’s password—locking us out of the 5,000 systems.

New Mirai Botnet Unleashes a DDoS Attack That Lasted for 54 Hours!

Following high-profile DDoS attacks that took down swathes of internet by impacting Dyn DNS services, Mirai is apparently still going strong. One of the highlights of 2016, Mirai is a botnet malware based on Internet of Things. The trojan’s source code was leaked online at the end of the last year, leading to more variants of it.

Researchers are now reporting that one of Mirai variants has been targeting networks of a US college and the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack went on for 54 hours – straight!

Vigilante botnet infects IoT devices before blackhats can hijack them
Hajime battles with Mirai for control over the Internet of poorly secured things.

Mirai, the botnet that threatened the Internet as we knew it last year with record-setting denial-of-service attacks, is facing an existential threat of its own: A competing botnet known as Hajime has infected at least 10,000 home routers, network-connected cameras, and other so-called Internet of Things devices.

Hajime uses a decentralized peer-to-peer network to issue commands and updates to infected devices. This design makes it more resistant to takedowns by ISPs and Internet backbone providers. Hajime uses the same list of user name and password combinations Mirai uses, with the addition of two more. It also takes steps to conceal its running processes and files, a feature that makes detecting infected systems more difficult. Most interesting of all: Hajime appears to be the brainchild of a grayhat hacker, as evidenced by a cryptographically signed message it displays every 10 minutes or so on terminals.

Minecraft was Destroying the Internet Even Before Ajit Pai

This is quite a long read over at Wired, but it is incredibly interesting if you are into network security. Long story short, it all started with some geeks trying to bring down competitive Minecraft servers were the guys responsible for all sorts of DDoS attacks last year.
THE MOST DRAMATIC cybersecurity story of 2016 came to a quiet conclusion Friday in an Anchorage courtroom, as three young American computer savants pleaded guilty to masterminding an unprecedented botnet powered by unsecured internet-of-things devices like security cameras and wireless routers—that unleashed sweeping attacks on key internet services around the globe last fall. What drove them wasn’t anarchist politics or shadowy ties to a nation-state. It was Minecraft.
