Rogue Robot Blamed for Human Colleague’s Gruesome Death

Holbrook was in the plant’s six-cell "100 section" when a robot unexpectedly activated, taking her by surprise. The cells are separated by safety doors and the robot should not have been able to move. But it somehow reached Holbrook, and was intent on loading a trailer-hitch assembly part right where she stood over a similar part in another cell. The machine loaded the hardware onto Holbrook’s head. She was unable to escape, and her skull was crushed. Co-workers who eventually noticed that something seemed amiss found Holbrook dead.

The U.S. will be hit worse by job automation than other major economies

Nearly 40 percent of jobs in the U.S. may be vulnerable to replacement by robots in the next fifteen years, according to a new study by the research firm PwC.

Other major advanced economies have fewer jobs at risk. The study estimates that 30 percent of jobs in the United Kingdom could be threatened by technical advancements in automation from AI and robotics, compared to 35 percent in Germany and 21 percent in Japan.

The U.S. has a higher percentage of jobs under threat by automation because more workers in the U.S. are employed in positions that require routinized tasks, like filling out paperwork.

Silicon Valley security robot beat up in parking lot, police say
The droid can scan 300 license plates a minute.

A 300-pound egg-shaped security robot was punched to the ground by an allegedly drunken man outside a Silicon Valley shopping center, Mountain View police said.
    ...
The five-foot-tall, K5 robots can read 300 license plates per minute. They also are equipped to supply 360-degree video streaming. Once an anomaly is detected by these robots, they alert security guards. The robots are not armed.

    Robots Aren't Destroying Enough Jobs

In a contrarian piece, one writer argues that robots destroying jobs isn’t what we should be worried about: the actual concern is that they are not destroying enough of them, particularly in so-called "low-productivity" sectors that include health care and hospitality. He seems to suggest that unemployment is being exaggerated, especially in these areas, which happen to be resistant to automation and are "holding back the entire country's standard of living."

Technology is still destroying jobs -- just more slowly. In part that's because American consumption is gravitating toward goods and services whose production isn't easily automated. William Baumol, an economist who died last week at the age of 95, long ago observed that societies would devote a growing share of their income to consumption in sectors where productivity was stagnant. Think of a Mozart string quartet. Four musicians must still be paid to perform it, implying a two-century productivity growth rate of zero. As the share of output grew in stagnant sectors, overall productivity growth would slow.

Meet Tertill the robot: It will patrol your garden, killing things

The Tertill is similar to the Roomba in many ways, except that it drives around your garden; this time it is in search of weeds as opposed to just dust.
