Google to EU: Android can’t be a monopoly when the iPhone exists
    ...
The problem at the heart of the European investigation is actually Google’s control of its Play Store, which is the central portal for app distribution on Android and pretty much essential to any new Android smartphone. And since Apple doesn’t license or open-source iOS, and Microsoft’s Windows 10 has no mobile ecosystem to speak of, any new smartphone in Europe that isn’t an iPhone is compelled to carry Google’s apps.
    ...

This Google-powered AI can identify your terrible doodles
And it’s getting better all the time

As part of Google’s slew of artificial intelligence announcements today, the company is releasing a number of AI web experiments powered by its cloud services that anyone can go and play with. One — called Quick, Draw! — gives you a prompt to draw an image of a written word or phrase in under 20 seconds with your mouse cursor in such a way that a neural network can identify it. It’s both a hilarious and fascinating exercise with broader implications for how AI can self-learn over time in key AI research areas like image recognition and optical character recognition.

YouTube Says They Can't Find A Subscription Glitch, But Something Doesn't Add Up
    ...
For the past few months, YouTubers have been pointing out critical fluctuations in their subscriber counts. Huge channels like PewDiePie, JackSepticEye, h3h3Productions, DramaAlert, Boogie2988 and hundreds of smaller channels posted videos relaying fans’ complaints that they were randomly unsubscribed from their channels, or didn’t see the YouTubers’ videos in their subscriber feed.

Google is using machine learning to reduce the data needed for high-resolution images
The company says its techniques reduce data costs up to 75 percent per image

The machine learning technique in question works in a similar way to most upsampling methods — inserting new pixels into low-resolution images to make up for lost detail. But, while traditional upsampling uses fixed rules to work out which new pixels to use where, RAISR adapts its methods to each image. It also pays special attention to “edge features” (bits of the image which look like the edge of an object), making the resulting larger image look less blurred.

There’s a big spike in Google searches related to World War II
Unusually popular search terms include "Reichstag fire" and "Kristallnacht."
    ...
Searches for “Reichstag fire,” the event that precipitated Adolf Hitler’s declaration of martial law in 1933, peaked worldwide the month after the Brexit vote in Britain and again in October 2016 before the US election. Those searches eventually reached an exceptional five-year high in the first week of February 2017.

Google Brain super-resolution image tech makes “zoom, enhance!” real
Google Brain creates new image details out of thin air.

Google Brain has devised some new software that can create detailed images from tiny, pixelated source images. Google's software, in short, basically means the "zoom in... now enhance!" TV trope is actually possible.

Google Paid Top Talent So Much That They Quit

When Google starts a new business venture, they tend to give huge bonuses for employees to stay and invent. These bonuses are based on the perceived value of the new venture. Needless to say, autonomous cars is a hot commodity today, and the Google employees working in the new Waymo division were well compensated. The bonuses were so ridiculous that employees coined the term "F-you money." They even received compensation as investments into the company and multipliers based on periodic evaluations. Some became millionaires on a product that still has years of R&D left before it can come to market!

This sounds like a great concept in theory, but in reality it has caused these employees to quit the company altogether. It seems that paying employees so well that they are financially independent means that they will leave and start their own companies, or work for someone else if a leadership change comes along.

Breakthrough means Google's internet-delivering balloons are much closer to market launch

For years now, Alphabet / Google’s moonshot project to deliver wireless internet to rural areas by using balloons has been seen as a possible mid-term solution to lack of internet access. But a recent breakthrough, takes the project out of the realm of “possible” and into the realm of “nearly certain”.

Google reveals a Windows vulnerability as Microsoft fails to patch it

Google has been actively finding new security vulnerabilities in Microsoft's products through its Project Zero research wing. The company has now disclosed an issue with Windows, which Microsoft hasn't patched within the 90-day window given by Google after reporting it to the Redmond giant.

Google’s Featured Snippets Are Destroying Small Businesses

You aren’t the only one who takes the "Featured Snippets" box for granted—so does Google. Imagine being asked by the search giant to give up your website’s information for their Knowledge Graph, telling them no (since it would be of no benefit to you and merely reduce your hits), but having them steal your data anyway and seeing your traffic destroyed. That is reportedly what happened to CelebrityNetWorth.com, and probably many others. Worse is that many of the snippets did not even link back to the appropriate site.

Youtube's Shifting Algorithms Hurt Independent Media

Ad revenue generated for videos on the Youtube service has shrunk by 99.5% for many channels when major brands pulled their advertising earlier this year. This was due to the ads being run on a few videos promoting terrorism and extremism. Youtube was told to tighten the reins on the type of content that ads from major brand's are run, and the new algorithm in place is ever shifting and changing. This has led to a precipitous drop in revenue for independent media to the point where channels are having to ask for donations. Channels that tackle sensitive subjects such as depression, suicide, anxiety, rape, and child abuse in a way to help people are being blocked from generating revenue as these are now flagged as offensive topics. Video game rants are now scanned for offensive language and blocked from ad revenue. Comedians that use any colorful language during their routine are also blocked. Military weapon channels only generate 25% of the revenue that they previous did before due to being "hidden" from being shown in a prominent manner on the website. Videos showing war and natural disasters are blocked from generating ad revenue.

Google’s “Fuchsia” smartphone OS dumps Linux, has a wild new UI
Taking a look at Google's mysterious third operating system.

Google, never one to compete in a market with a single product, is apparently hard at work on a third operating system after Android and Chrome OS. This one is an open source, real-time OS called "Fuchsia." The OS first popped up in August last year, but back then it was just a command line. Now the mysterious project has a crazy new UI we can look at, so let's dive in.
