AMD claws back some discrete-GPU market share

Going by Mercury Research's information, AMD increased its share of total discrete GPU sales to 34.2% of the market (by unit volume) in the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 4.8 percent from the previous quarter. AMD's desktop add-in-board sales took the most ground, gaining 7.7% over the previous quarter to make up 29.9% of desktop discrete GPU sales.

AMD’s FreeSync beating Nvidia’s G-Sync

According to PC World, FreeSync monitors are not only cheaper, but offer a wider range of vendors, screen size, refresh rate, and resolution.

Part of the problem is Nvidia’s proprietary G-Sync hardware module jacks up the price but the biggest issue is apparently G-Sync’s limited availability. Yep, despite the fact that Nvidia’s steel capped boot has been on the GPU’s throat for ages, it is thin on the ground and in any event monitor designers don’t like it.

Report: Early Ryzen benchmarks show promise

I'll cut to the chase: in synthetic and productivity benchmarks like video encoding, 3D rendering, and CAD, the Ryzen sample sits comfortably between the 6-core Core i7-6800K and the 8-core i7-6900K. Meanwhile, in gaming benchmarks, the Ryzen sample sits between the Core i5-6500 and Core i5-6600 CPUs. All in all, not a bad showing for an engineering sample of AMD's new chip.

The performance of this chip is impressive considering that Canard PC says its sample runs at a base clock of 3.15 GHz and a turbo speed of 3.3 GHz. That's significantly below the 3.4 GHz base clock that AMD promised in a recent presentation.
