Hanging by a thread: How the online nerdy T-shirt economy exists in an IP world
If big media has legal muscle, why can you buy Link racing Harley Quinn on a shirt?
    ...
But how exactly can a shirt with Link cycling next to Batman and Harley Quinn exist in a world of DMCA takedowns, cease-and-desist letters, and stringent IP enforcement? Where do these designs come from and how can the sheer mass of these T-shirt sites all successfully operate? When it comes to the Internet-based economy of pop culture T-shirts, it turns out a few loose threads are holding the whole landscape together.

    Intel worried about McAfee’s phone

Intel is fuming that MGT Capital Investments went ahead with the announcement of the “John McAfee Privacy Phone” when it previously said that it did not plan to launch products and services under the McAfee mark.
For those who came in late MGT Capital Investments is owned by John McAfee who sold the trademark and which ended up in the claws of Chipzilla. Intel , which once claimed to own the letter i, is now insisting that McAfee can't use his name on products.

Cloudflare, sued by its first “patent troll,” hits back hard
Blackbird Technologies, owned by its own lawyers, has filed over 100 lawsuits.
    ...
Prince goes on to say that "Cloudflare will not settle this case and doesn’t plan to settle any patent troll case, ever." In addition, Cloudflare will spend $50,000 to crowdsource prior art that could invalidate Blackbird's patents. By issuing the prior art "bounty," Cloudflare seeks not just to invalidate the patent asserted against Cloudflare, but of any of the 37 other patents and applications owned by Blackbird.

Alan Wake killed by Roy Orbison
    ...
Remedy Entertainment’s third-person spooker Alan Wake [official site] will receive a 90% discount on Steam this weekend, right before it gets pulled from stores – possibly forever. The Max Payne creators says Alan Wake has to go because its music licenses are expiring. Pop songs play at the end of each chapter, see, which means that Alan Wake was killed by a conspiracy including Roy Orbison, Nick Cave (I’ve always said those mates of his are some real bad seeds!), and David Bowie. If you already own Alan Wake or buy now, you will still get to download and play after it’s pulled from sale.

Activists marched to Tim Berners-Lee's office to protest EME DRM

The Encrypted Media Extensions interface has been implemented on all major browsers including Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Microsoft Edge, as of 2016. Mozilla was hesitant to implement the protocol citing ethical reasons due to its dependency on proprietary code. It loads the DRM modules in an open-source sandbox which has been specially designed to hamper the DRM’s ability to track and identify devices.

We Know Uber Stole Google Waymo...but that's Cool

I am not sure what to think about this. Earlier this year, Google/Alphabet/Waymo sued Uber for ripping off patented and trade secret tech regarding self driving car research back in early 2016.

“Genericide” legal assault to nullify the Google trademark fails
Google doesn’t lose trademark even if it is a generic term for searching the Web.

Qualcomm sues Apple's contract manufacturers for withholding royalties

Earlier this year Apple filed a billion dollar lawsuit against Qualcomm for allegedly abusing its patent portfolio to unfairly obtain royalties from manufacturers. Contract manufacturers working for Apple were asked to stop paying royalties to Qualcomm in the wake of the lawsuit, which resulted in Qualcomm cutting back its profit and revenue forecast. Now, the chipmaker has sued Foxconn and three other contract manufacturer for withholding royalties for patents.

Does Valve really own Dota? A jury will decide
Federal court case could hinge on 2004 forum post granting "open source" license.
    ...
Federal Judge Charles Breyer of the Northern District of California lays out an excellent summary of Dota's development history in a recent ruling denying summary judgement for Heroes Charge developer uCool. Breyer explains how Dota started life in 2002 as a Warcraft III mod made by Eul (real name: Kyle Sommer), who created the mod on his own and thus holds the rights to the "setting, heroes, rules, and name."
