"StarForce, the company famous for developing problematic copy protection schemes for computer games issued a challenge recently to anyone who can drop by its office and demonstrate the problems. Unfortunately for those who were interested, StarForce's main office is located in Moscow."

"It’s therefore ironic, though not surprising, that several CD burning and disc emulation utilities are also using rootkits, though the technology is being used in the opposite way: to prevent DRM software from enforcing copy restrictions."

"The MPAA, however, has a very different spin on DRM. In their view, DRM is your friend, and life without DRM could be messy and complex. So says Dan Glickman, of the Motion Picture Association of America:
"Content owners use DRMs because it provides casual, honest users with guidelines for using and consuming content based on the usage rights that were acquired. Without the use of DRMs, honest consumers would have no guidelines and might eventually come to totally disregard copyright and therefore become a pirate, resulting in great harm to content creators," he said."

"Trusted Network Connect (TNC) has arrived—in prototype form, at least—at the RSA Security Conference in San Jose. TNC is the brainchild of Trusted Computing Group (TCG), which consists of players like Microsoft, IBM, Intel, AMD, HP, and Sun, among others, and promises big changes to computing and networks in coming years. With that much economic horsepower behind TNC, you know it's something we'll be getting whether we like it or not, so just what the heck is it? I could paraphrase, but I think the TCG web site explains it in nicely-constructed corporatese:

    ...

Clear? I thought so. For anyone not interested in playing along at home, I'll translate: in base form, TNC is a way for networks to determine what software and hardware components are running on a machine, what components should be running on that machine, and whether that machine will be allowed access to a network. It's a kissin' cousin to the controversial Trusted Platform Module (TPM) that has been showing up in some computers for a while, perhaps most notably in the new Mactel machines."

"The battle in the trenches is a different matter.
Both sides have a lot at stake in this war. Hollywood fears, with good reason, that if the other side wins, that will be the end of their business as they've known it. The cyberinsurgents fear, with good reason, that if the other side wins, that will be the end of their culture as they've known it."

"If you were one of the many consumers that purchased a Sony BMG CD that had XCP or MediaMax copy protection on it, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) wants you to come forward to see what type of compensation you will receive. If you think you may be a victim of one of the company's rootkit CDs, the EFF also has a site that explains how to submit a claim, view a list of affected CDs and a description of benefits. "

"Recently found online were the results of some tests conducted on the battery life of various digital music players. Specifically, a range of players were used under various conditions—such as varying file formats or using the backlight—with the goal of determining how much the battery life changes under those conditions.
    ...
Although the article discusses a number of factors that can contribute to shorter battery life, the thing that has bloggers talking is the fact that files containing digital rights management (DRM) drain the battery faster than files with no DRM."

"This week the world rejoiced. Mac users could run Windows XP or OSX and switch between them with the newly released Boot Camp. Not the best solution (you have to restart the system to switch to the other OS) but better than software emulation and hey, it’s a start.
Now the bad news. It looks like Intel has embedded “Trusted Computing” DRM protection in its Infineon chip and forgot to tell people. If you remember the Sony rootkit uproar, you know this is not small news."

"A RealNetworks vice president voiced a few inflammatory opinions during LinuxWorld Boston last Tuesday. The RealNetworks rep in question, Jeff Ayars, said that Linux as a consumer platform would be dead unless DRM capabilities are built into the OS itself.
"The consequences of Linux not supporting DRM would be that fixed-purpose consumer electronics and Windows PCs would be the sole entertainment platforms available," Ayers said. "Linux would be further relegated to use in servers and business computers, since it would not be providing the multimedia technologies demanded by consumers.""

    NO DRM, NO LinuX?

During LinuxWorld Boston, last tuesday, a RealNetworks executive - Jeff Ayars, said that either Linux implements DRM capabilities, or it will excluded from the consumer market. According to him, without DRM, people won't be able to reproduce digital content, therefore will have to opt for another operating system.
    - Georg Greve, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe
"Linspire has not added DRM into our (distribution) yet but would like to add it if we are given the opportunity, provided it is a DRM that is being used by consumer products (such as Apple's FairPlay or Microsoft's PlaysForSure). If someone comes out with an open-source DRM, we'd be behind it, but we need major content providers to support it as well," Welch said.

Espero que o Linux, não implementa essas porcarias todas...
