Default Virtual Reality - Vale a pena?

    Boas!

Ask Ars: I can’t choose between Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR!
It’s still too early to judge what’s "best," but we can still help you pick.

Virtual Reality: The True Cost of Admission

For those of us that are still a little confused about what it takes to run each of the upcoming VR headsets, what each one comes with and how much they cost, this article should come in handy.

What seems pretty cut-and-dry gets complicated in a hurry when you consider that none of these are standalone platforms; they all rely on additional hardware – be it a computer, a game console or a smartphone – to power the experience. To help make sense of it all, we've gone through the hassle of analyzing everything to see what the true cost of ownership looks like. Some of the findings may surprise you.

The Ars review: Oculus Rift expands PC gaming past the monitor’s edge
Despite first-gen roughness, PC virtual reality is finally—incredibly—real.
    ...
It can be easy to fall back into the “look straight ahead” habit when you first start playing many Rift games. Even when the 3D display showed items flying past my shoulder or out of my peripheral vision, I’d often reach instinctively for the right analog stick or the shoulder buttons on my controller to try to turn the camera. It would take a split second before I realized, “Hey, wait, I can just turn and look for the thing I want to see.”

Hands-on with HoloLens: On the cusp of a revolution
It's an amazing device, and now it needs amazing software to go with it.

Augmented reality (AR), or as Microsoft calls it, mixed reality, blends computer-generated imagery with the real world, and that poses a problem that virtual reality (VR) doesn't have to care about: objects that are positioned in the real world need to maintain their relative position in the real world even as you move around. Keeping them anchored in place is essential to making them seem real.

    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/...-a-revolution/
I went rogue during a demonstration of Microsoft's holographic goggles and had the time of my life

You get around by pointing and "air-tapping," which is best described as clicking an imaginary mouse. To exit from an app, you make what they call a "blooming" motion, which involves putting all your fingers in your palm and then opening up.

Right out of the gate, the HoloLens has the Microsoft Edge browser (more on that later), and simple photo and video recording options to shoot what you see. Eventually, HoloLens will get a whole slew of Windows 10 apps, too.

Sorry, Oculus, but HoloLens gets my money

At one point, there were six of us, all wearing HoloLenses, interacting with the same 3D model and each other in real time. One of Microsoft’s babysitters walked over and asked, “So, where is the Energy Portal.” I looked over at him, frowned and was wondering what the hell was wrong with him.

“It is right there,” I snapped, pointing. It was at that point that I caught myself, realizing he wasn’t wearing a HoloLens, and so obviously had no way of seeing where the portal was. That was the exact moment that I realized why AR makes so much more sense than VR: Being in the real world is natural, even if it has digital doo-dahs floating about in your field of vision. Being in a fully artificial world isn’t.

The Ars VR headset showdown—Oculus Rift vs. HTC Vive
Our tale of the tape comparison makes a first-generation recommendation.
    ...
Right now, there are too many questions about how the VR platform wars will shake out to be fully comfortable locking in to any one system. You don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on what amounts to the Betamax of VR. Even if neither headset is a complete market failure, it's hard to know at this early date which one will attract the best exclusive software going forward.

Homebrew patch makes many Oculus VR games perfectly playable on HTC Vive
Patches appear to support all Unity and Unreal releases, still require Oculus runtimes.

In the race to the top of virtual reality, Oculus and HTC have kicked off a hardware showdown the likes of which we haven't seen since the "Nintendon't" days. However, the war includes a curious compatibility issue: HTC's current software hub, SteamVR, can be accessible by Oculus headset wearers, but Oculus Home doesn't currently support the HTC Vive.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has publicly stated that "we can only extend our SDK to work with other headsets if the manufacturer allows us to do so," seemingly passing the buck to HTC and Valve in regards to why its Oculus Store games don't natively support the other leading PC headset. Valve has denied this assertion. Either way, we no longer have to wait for the companies to settle their legal and licensing differences, thanks to the efforts of the LibreVR plug-in, dubbed Revive.

Palmer Luckey’s Trump fund has been a kick in the teeth for VR
And a potential blow to Oculus
    ...
Last night, The Daily Beast reported that virtual reality pioneer Palmer Luckey had secretly funded a pro-Trump group called Nimble America, dedicated to promoting internet memes and "shitposting" in support of the candidate. While Luckey’s general political alignment hadn’t been a secret, the news potentially tied him to some of the uglier parts of Trump’s online support base, including alt-right cheerleader Milo Yiannopoulos. Late on Friday, Luckey called the reports of his Trump support inaccurate, although he admitted to donating $10,000 to the group in question — and one of his key claims remains in doubt.

VR Devs Pull Support For Oculus Rift Until Palmer Luckey Steps Down

Many seem unpleased with the Oculus founder’s political views and are retaliating. Wait, why does it even matter which candidate Mr. Luckey wants to support?

Several virtual reality game developers have announced that they will stop supporting Facebook’s Oculus Rift VR headset until its founder Palmer Luckey steps down. Developers announced that they will stop supporting the Oculus Rift after The Daily Beast revealed that Luckey raised money for a pro-Donald Trump non-profit through a convoluted Reddit scheme. As Motherboard reported on Friday, Luckey’s Twitter activity has been sympathetic to the alt-right and the bigotry that defines it since March of this year.

HTC Vive Helps Legally Blind Man See Clearly For The First Time

This is really a great story. Hopefully HTC hears about this and sends the guy a Vive for "medicinal purposes." At least that way the guy wouldn't have to make trips all the way to London just to get a 15 - 20 minute VR demo.

Soar suffers from a hereditary eye condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa. In essence, it makes him debilitatingly near-sighted and requires him to use a blind cane at night or in dark spaces. His afflictions also include diplopia — which causes nearly constant double vision. On this day, however, the boggling of Soar’s eyes had nothing to do with his visual limitations and everything to do with the sight he was beholding.
