    Default USB Type-C - O próximo

    Boas!

Tiny, reversible USB Type-C connector finalized
New connector can replace all current USB plugs.

The USB Promoter Group announced today that it has finalized the design of the USB Type-C plug, a new type of USB plug that's designed to completely replace every size of all current USB connectors. Like Apple's Lightning cables, the new connector is reversible so that it can be used in any orientation.

According to the USB-IF's press release (PDF), the new connector is "similar in size" to current micro USB 2.0 Type-B connectors (the ones you use for most non-Apple phones and tablets). It is designed to be "robust enough for laptops and tablets" and "slim enough for mobile phones." The openings for the connector measure roughly 8.4mm by 2.6mm.

Lembras-te da confusão que era antes do USB?

A brief history of USB, what it replaced, and what has failed to replace it
USB isn't perfect, but it replaced lots of ports we'll never have to see again.

    AHHAHAHAH

ímpar, aquelas portas LPT e Série, configurar os periféricos era uma dor de cabeça por causa dos conflitos IRQ nas board's etc etc..

USB 3.1 and Type-C: The only stuff at CES that everyone is going to use
The new specifications are almost here—we actually have a cable!

I have a USB Type-C cable—yeah, the reversible one. I can't connect it to anything I own yet, but it's a real thing that's in production and shipping to companies. Most of CES amounts to so much smoke and mirrors and vague hand-waving about the Future, but I can say with confidence that this little port is a thing that everyone reading this will start using in the next couple of years.

I got the cable from the USB Implementers Forum as part of a general update on the state of both USB 3.1 and the new reversible Type-C connector. There wasn't much information about either spec that we haven't already heard, but the difference is that the connector and spec update are very close to being in our hands.

Explaining the “USB 3.1 Gen 1” port in the Retina MacBook
Not all USB 3.1 ports are created equal, as the new laptop shows.

Apple’s spec page for the new MacBook says that this port supports “USB 3.1 gen 1,” which there hasn’t been much discussion about. We know that the USB Implementers Forum finalized the USB 3.1 spec back in 2013, and that it raises the theoretical bandwidth of the USB bus from USB 3.0’s 5Gbps to 10Gbps. That’s not the version of the USB 3.1 spec that Apple is offering.

    USB-C has already won
One reversible cable to rule them all
    ...
Although USB-C seems an inevitable success at this point, it does have a couple of issues to iron out, perhaps the most pressing of which is the complexity of its offering. There will be USB 2.0 devices with USB-C connectors, like the Nokia N1; USB 3.1 devices that use regular USB-A connectors; USB 3.1 "Gen 1" devices only capable of 5Gbps transfer speeds over USB-C, like the new Chromebook Pixel and MacBook; and USB 3.1 Gen 2 devices that give you 10Gbps. USB-C could be the only cable you ever need, but at this point it may be hard to know exactly what performance you’re going to get when you plug something in.

"I think there’s the potential for confusion," says Ravencraft, whose forum publishes language and usage guidelines for both USB 3.1 and USB-C.

USB Type-C cable so bad it fries Google engineer’s Chromebook Pixel
Benson Leung, the Type-C cable testing vigilante, has finally met his match.

Benson Leung, the Google engineer who moonlights as a tester of dodgy USB Type-C cables, has sadly performed his last act of tech vigilantism—at least for now. When testing a Surjtech 3M USB A-to-C cable, the cable was so bad that it fried his Chromebook Pixel laptop and two USB PD (power delivery) analysers.

USB-IF announces Audio over USB Type-C standard

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced a new specification for carrying audio over the USB Type-C connector, in a bid to wave farewell to the humble 3.5mm audio jack.

You have no idea how deep the USB-C spec rabbit hole goes
Watching an engineer at work is a true joy
    ...
We’ve already written many times about Benson Leung, the Google engineer who tests and reviews USB-C products. But you might not know that Leung has a compatriot in testing: Nathan K. K is an engineer who unapologetically goes deep on USB-C testing, criticizing everything from random cables to Google’s Pixel to Apple’s products. Turns out the latter have not always been quite as standards-compliant as they could be.

    The Impossible Dream of USB-C

Programmer Marco Arment loves the idea of USB-C and its potential for replacing all other cables, but in practice, he argues that it isn’t even close: these reasons include sporadic Thunderbolt support, port shortages, unreliable chips in dongles, and complexities with fast charging.
