France Threatens to Fine WhatsApp over Facebook Data Sharing

The French data protection authority CNIL is giving Facebook-owned WhatsApp one month to start complying with French privacy law when sharing user data with its parent company. The ultimatum comes after WhatsApp in August 2016 started sharing certain user information, like phone numbers and analytics data, with Facebook.

How WeChat came to rule China
The multipurpose messaging app is becoming the nation’s ID system
    ...
Now WeChat is poised to become China’s electronic ID system, state-run Xinhua reported in December. WeChat will issue virtual ID cards, which individuals would use in lieu of physical state-issued ID cards. Since WeChat requires users to register with their real names per government policy, it’s not a stretch to imagine that one day, WeChat may fully replace state IDs. Harvard Business School professor of management Willy Shih, who co-authored a case study on WeChat, calls the transition to an electronic ID system a “predictable evolution.”

US Considers “Cloud Act” to Authorize Faster Access to Internationally Stored Data

The Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act – or the Cloud Act – will authorize faster access to data needed to prosecute serious crime in the US, Britain, and other allied governments. The NYT reports that a new bill is being proposed that would enable the US to obtain data stored on a foreign soil after special agreements between the countries to resolve potential conflicts of law or sovereignty issues.

Documents Show Tor Project is Nearly 100% U.S Government Funded

Author Yasha Levine is writing a book called Surveillance Valley, and in his research, filed a FIOA request that produced nearly 2,500 pages of correspondence between the Tor Project, and it's main funder, a CIA spinoff now known as the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).

MoviePass CEO Brags About How Much Data it Collects

In an interview at the Entertainment Finance Forum, the CEO of MoviePass Mitch Lowe had a lot to say, and some of it was rather shocking. While the interview was mostly about statistics and company projections, when the interviewer asked about data collection, things turned grim. Lowe boasted saying the following:

"We get an enormous amount of information," he said, noting the company knows subscribers’ addresses and can glean demographic information based on where they live. The company also can track subs via the app and a phone GPS.
"We watch how you drive from home to the movies," he said. "We watch where you go afterwards."
That sort of data fits into a long-term revenue plan.

Chinese Police Test New Security Tool: Smart Glasses

China will ban people with poor ‘social credit’ from planes and trains
The new restrictions, which start in May, can last for up to a year

Starting in May, Chinese citizens who rank low on the country’s burgeoning “social credit” system will be in danger of being banned from buying plane or train tickets for up to a year, according to statements recently released by the country’s National Development and Reform Commission.

With the social credit system, the Chinese government rates citizens based on things like criminal behavior and financial misdeeds, but also on what they buy, say, and do. Those with low “scores” have to deal with penalties and restrictions. China has been working towards rolling out a full version of the system by 2020, but some early versions of it are already in place.

Facebook May Have Violated FTC Privacy Deal

Expanding on the story we covered yesterday where Cambridge Analytica harvested millions of Facebook profiles, an article from The Washington Post states that Facebook may have violated an FTC decree. The article states that two former federal officials who crafted the consent decree governing how facebook handles user privacy say that that decree may have been violated when it shared the information of tens of millions of its users. The former director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection states that Facebook could face a fine of $40,000 per violation. Meaning that if the data of 50 million people were shared is true, Facebook's possible fines runs into the trillions of dollars.

House passes controversial legislation giving the US more access to overseas data
    ...
A number of nonprofit groups oppose the bill on privacy grounds, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Amnesty International, and the Open Technology Institute. The harshest criticism focuses on the new powers granted to the attorney general, who can enter into agreements with foreign countries unilaterally. Those agreements could potentially circumvent the protections of US courts. The act also wouldn’t require users or local governments to be notified when a data request is made, making meaningful oversight significantly harder.

Mozilla’s new Firefox add-on stops Facebook tracking your online habits

Mozilla is capitalizing on the recent fears over Facebook privacy and data by creating a new Firefox extension that stops Facebook from tracking your online habits. The new “Facebook Container” creates a blue-colored browser tab that isolates your Facebook session from the rest of your web activity. It’s designed to prevent Facebook from collecting what sites you visit, and targeting you with ads and other messages.

The Profile Engine Has Been Donated to the Internet Archive

In 2007, Chris Claydon created the Profile Engine, a search engine that ultimately crawled Facebook and copied all of its public users’ profile data from 2007 to 2010. After much controversy, particularly from individuals wanting to be forgotten, the data will apparently live on indefinitely, as Claydon has decided to publicize the entire database.
