After vote to kill privacy rules, users try to “pollute” their Web history
"ISP Data Pollution" fills browsing history with noise to protect your privacy.

Stealing Browser History With Ambient Light

Privacy guru Lukasz Olejnik has discovered a way to steal a user's browser history using the ambient light sensors commonly installed in mobile devices. Ambient light sensors have become standard hardware for everything from smart phones, tablets, laptops and TVs. They are so common, that the World Wide Web Consortium developed an API that ships with browsers like Chrome and Firefox for the sole purpose of interacting with those sensors. It gets even worse. Google is trying to remove the permission requirements for these devices to make their PC based browser software more akin to their mobile bretheren. The ambient light sensor isn't their only focus. If they have their way, browsers will be able to interact with the phone's gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer. Interesting indeed.

Backdoors: The Road to Hell is Paved with Them

I was watching FBI Director James Comey talk last week on TV during his Congressional hearing, and he revealed that almost 50% of its current investigations were in some way hampered by encrypted devices.

First six months of this fiscal year, FBI examiners were presented with over 6,000 devices for which we have a lawful authority search warrant or court order to open and 46 percent of those cases we could not open those devices with any technique. That means half of the devices that we encounter in terrorism cases, in counterintelligence cases, in gang cases, in child pornography cases, cannot be opened with any technique. That is a big problem. And so the shadow continues to fall.
Orrin Hatch went on to suggest that back doors could be inserted into these devices without compromising our privacy as users.

UK about to go mental with Internet laws

The UK government is planning to enact a daft batch of Internet reform which will require people to register at the post office if they want to access porn sites.
Other plans involve the death of end-to-end encryption and carry out mass surveillance in near-real time.

GDPR: What it is, and what it means for you
    ...
Back in January of 2012, the European Commission – the executive branch of the EU – put forth its proposal for a reform of the Union’s data protection rules. Basically, this called for a better way for companies operating in the EU to handle the personal data of their customers. After further discussions, an agreement was reached between the European Parliament, Commission, and Council, on December 15, 2015.

EU Parliament wants to protect end-to-end encryption

European governments that think they can stop terrorism by weakening end-to-end encryption might find their efforts stalled by the European Union.
The civil liberties committee of the European Parliament has released a draft proposal which is in direct contrast to the efforts by the US, British and German governments to introduce regulations or weaken encryption.
The draft recommends a regulation that will enforce end-to-end encryption on all communications to protect European Union citizens' fundamental privacy rights.

A GOP voter-targeting firm was doing massive data analysis on Reddit
    ...
Deep Root leaked profiles of nearly 200 million potential voters as well, and it’s possible that it was trying to match names to Reddit profiles — which would give them a deep look at the preferences of specific voters. Gizmodo notes that the Obama campaign matched voter records with Facebook profiles, but it’s unclear that someone could do the same with Reddit, where few people operate under their real names.

DOJ wants Supreme Court to reconsider decision in Microsoft email case

As a reminder, in 2013 a New York district judge ordered Microsoft to provide the personal details of a customer undergoing an investigation. Because the data was stored in Ireland, the Redmond giant refused to comply, citing via Deputy General Counsel David Howard that "the U.S. government doesn’t have the power to search a home in another country, nor should it have the power to search the content of email stored overseas." The case was eventually resolved in Microsoft's favour last year, but the Department of Justice wasn't too pleased, and has recently taken a step to challenge the ruling.

Roomba Maker Plans to Sell Maps of Your Home

Do you own a Roomba? The little robot vacuum could have been mapping your home, and that data may be up for sale: Colin Angle, chief executive of Roomba maker iRobot, has admitted that the company is seeking a deal to sell its maps to one or more of the "Big Three" (Amazon, Apple, Google) in the next couple of years. The company released the Roomba 980 in 2015, a Wi-Fi model capable of collecting spacial data using visual localization, sensors, and more.

How the NSA identified Satoshi Nakamoto

Here's a cool, but also frightening story on some of the methods the NSA used to figure out the real identity of "Satoshi Nakamoto," the creator of bitcoin. The NSA used stylometry, to compare and determine his writing style with thousands of his writings to forage through on the internet. In a combination of the surveillance, the agency ran his writings through PRISM and compared it with the trillions of emails the organization has access to for investigations.
Yes, the government knows who you are and you can't conceal it. You can find the a link to some of email exchanges of Nakamoto given to the Wall Street Journal here.

Justice Department goes nuclear on Google in search warrant fight
Google’s conduct is a “willful and contemptuous disregard of various court orders.”
    ...
The Justice Department is demanding that a federal judge sanction Google for failing to abide by court orders to turn over data tied to 22 e-mail accounts. "Google's conduct here amounts to a willful and contemptuous disregard of various court orders," the government wrote (PDF) in a legal filing to US District Judge Richard Seeborg of California.
    ...
Google said it wasn't complying with the order because it was on appeal. Google also said it was following precedent from a New York-based federal appellate court that ruled Microsoft doesn't have to comply with a valid US warrant for data if the information is stored on overseas servers.

Woman Films Her Internet-Connected Camera Whispering "Hola, Senorita"

A couple of months ago, Rilana Hamer from the Netherlands bought a small internet-connected camera from a local convenience store. She wanted to use the device to keep an eye on her puppy while away from the house, but it wasn’t only the puppy that was being watched: the camera would later follow her moves and talk back to her in different languages.
