The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt goes open world

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has made its debut in the latest issue of GameInformer US, and boasts a completely open world.

The issue’s cover has been scanned and uploaded to NeoGAF along with a few details harvested from within.

According to reader reports, the open world is 20% bigger than that of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and will take up to 40 minutes to cross on horseback.

The story, like the world, is not divided into chapters or acts. The open world is enabled by a new streaming technology enabled by the new CDRED Engine 3.

Protagonist Geralt has recovered all his memories, and probably as a result is not interested in fighting for a faction. Instead, he wanders the world slaying monsters and solving mysteries, as in the books. The image on the cover shows Geralt riding with an adult companion whose face cannot be seen.

CD Projekt RED apparently did not give platform information beyond a mention of “all top-of-the-line” consoles, suggesting a potential next-generation release (hello, PlayStation 4). The GameInformer cover describes it as a “must see next generation RPG”.

    Mais info:

    - The team felt it missed the huge freedom of open-world games like Skyrim
    - Proper mounted combat still being tested
    - Currently not a definite part of the game
    - Horses will be in, though, since they’re important for navigation
    - Ships float on the water in true physics interactions
    - Team has doubled in size
    - No chapters, acts, or any artificial break-points
    - Geralt can seamlessly cross from one end of the world to the other thanks to REDengine 3
    - No loading screens while traveling in the open world
    - Can explore on foot, by horseback, and via boat
    - Pursue yor long-lost love, play the game of empires on behalf of the northern kingdoms that still claim independence, and thwart the nefarious Wild Hunt
    - Fast travel: instantly revisit any discovered location
    - Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz: “A huge goal is to keep the high quality o four quests, with all the cinematics and impressive events and moments.”
    - Point of interest will always be in sight
    - Players will be beckoned to explore dank caves, embattled villages, decaying ruins, etc.
    - Over 100 hours of hand-scripted quests
    - Quests: help villagers, engineer the succession of the Skellige kings, etc.
    - Use monster hunting for adventure, incoming, and unique rewards
    - There are mini-games based on the area of the world
    - Ex: Skellige has knife-throwing
    - Gain exclusive rewards from mini-games
    - Don’t have to complete mini-games to proceed in the story
    - Monsters, bandits, traders, animals, and more will attack anyone they deem hostile
    - Enemies don’t scale to the player’s level
    - Slaying monsters, fighting hostile humans in the different forms they come in, collecting items, leveling up are in the game
    - World 40 times larger than the last game
    - Three different aspects to narration
    - Lowest level: free-form activities like monster hunting, crafting, individual standalone quests
    - Second step: political situation and Nilfgaardian invasion is resolved through the core plotline of the major areas (Skellige, Novigrad, No Man’s Land)
    - Each land has its own storyline
    - Can abandon the storyline, but will have repercussions later
    - Not doing a plotline is a choice the player has
    - Main narrative: search for Geralt’s loved ones and conflict with the Wild Hunt
    - Multiple branches of narratives that feed into each other
    - Don’t have to do anything outside the main storyline to beat the game
    - Could have help in a main-line encounter from an ally you gained in the Skellige archipelago if you’ve completed certain quests in certain ways
    - Major events in the main storyline are “gates” for the state of the world
    - Ex: village threatened by bandits might be abandoned after certain events if the player doesn’t help
    - Weather effects are dynamically generated and fully modeled as real volumetric clouds rather than being simply painted on the skybox
    - In contrast to the last game, Geralt encounters communities and individuals with monster-related problems that need solving
    - There aren’t contract-like assignments this time
    - Press the left trigger to turn on Geralt’s witcher senses
    - Can glean information from a crime scene upon discovering it
    - Within range of a scene of interest, the mechanic conveys clues to the player through the witcher muttering to himself and/or visual depictions of past events that represent Geralt’s reasoning
    - Time of day and other conditions determine where monsters appear and their abilities
    - Can strike critical areas in combat based on how much you learn about monster anatomy and tactics
    - The team is deciding between using a handful of in-combat special moves for particular attacks and a slow-motion quick-time event style
    - Monsters you defeat leave otherwise unobtainable alchemical and crafting ingredients needed for making of unique items, potions, mutagens
    - These allow Geralt to gain special powers and upgrades in the new mutation development tree
    - These kills serve as the witcher’s primary method of income
    - Moving more toward romance and away from shallow sexual encounters
    - “We want to treat it maturely like we did in The Witcher 2. We are not bringing sex cards back.”
    - Witcher 3 doesn’t have completely different environments based on singular choices due to the open world, but there are similarly impactful decisions
    - You’ll be involved with mutually exclusive storylines and situations based on certain momentous choices
    - Won’t be on the same level as Witcher 2, however
    - Game mechanics based on previous games, but the team is revisiting many details
    - Backward difficulty curve being addressed
    - Reworking the flow of combat
    - 96 animations for Geralt’s combat moves (last game had 20)
    - Game has a “weighting” system for the camera to help keep the biggest threats in frame at all times
    - Combat system: three big changes to solve the problem of being locked into long animations
    - Every button press mapped to a single strike
    - Each move takes a roughly equivalent time to perform
    - Can always interrupt your current action to immediately dodge or block
    - Can block/dodge when out of stamina, but you’ll be staggered
    - Team wants to make the combat “more intimate”
    - “You don’t run – in the Witcher 2 you were running constantly. You walk, but your attacks are very fast. Your opponents also walk but they have charges and things like that.”
    - Geralt’s dodge roll replaced by a pivot move
    - It retains its defensive utility without game-breaking mobility
    - Attacks faster than in The Witcher 2
    - Enemy AI completely rebuilt
    - No scripted boss encounters
    - One boss: ice giant
    - Roughly a dozen types of interactive objects
    - Ex: Can irritate a wasp with the telekinetic Aard sign to make a damaging distraction for his foes and disperse the swarm with the fiery Igni sign once the wasp swarm becomes a problem
    - Magical signs are retooled
    - Each of the five signs has a basic form such as Igni’s new flamethrower effect
    - If the player advances down the magic tree as Geralt levels up, can unlock a second form of the sign
    - For Igni, would unlock a 360-degree blast that immolates anything close
    - Yrdren’s small trap can be changed into a bigger field that slows enemies
    - Player retains the use of the basic form
    - Other two trees are based on swordsmanship and alchemy
    - Swordfighting: can unlock new strikes and boosts such as improved stamina and parrying
    - Alchemy: mutation mechanic moved off to a separate development path, independent of the level-up process
    - Alchemy specialization is based more on potions
    - Improvements available for the horse and boat
    - These aspects are still in development
    - One idea: players could access their long-term storage stash from their horse as well as from inns
    - Team knows about frustrating inventory management in Witcher 2
    - Crafting still important for enhancing Geralt’s capabilities
    - Can customize crafted items
    - Some components are can be substituted for similar things
    - Ex: monster scales instead of leather in a piece of armor
    - This affects the properties of the final item
    - Can find unique components as part of monster hunts or questlines
    - Combine these with special recipes to make artifacts of immense power
    - Each armor piece has a unique appearance
    - Armor has improved presentation and new cloth simulation
    - Can visit a barber to change Geralt’s hairstyle

Witcher 3 conculdes Geralt’s adventures, Witcher 2 on sale

“People may ask if this is really going to be the last Witcher game. Yes, it is,” said studio head said Adam Badowski.

“Why? Because we believe that we should end the series on a high note. Technology has progressed to where we can finally tell the story the way we want, with the visuals we want, in the world we imagined. This will be the ultimate fantasy RPG experience, and while we’re hardly out of stories to tell, we believe it’s time for us to look to new worlds and new horizons to keep pushing the boundaries of what we can create.”

To celebrate the announcement, as well as the hope that Geralt will ride off happy into the sunset,CDP is putting The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition on sale through GoG.com and Steam for 50% off – but only for the next 72 hours.

The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition on Xbox 360 has also been given a permanent price drop, and will now run you €29.99/$29.99/₤19.99.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released in 2014 simultaneously on all high-end platforms and PC.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt team incorporating Witcher 2 feedback into development

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as you know, is in development at CD Projekt RED and according to director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the team tried to include as much fan feedback from The Witcher 2 as possible. You can hear the men discuss the development through the video interview posted on Game Informer. Witcher 3 is slated for high-end consoles and PC in 2014.

Witcher 3 dev wants game to be better than Skyrim & Dragon Age

“There’s a certain amount of things which you can do with PR”, said VP of business development Michal Nowakowski in a Game Informer video interview, “But there are limits to that. Without solid support and a solid budget – which we believe we can secure with the right partnership – it’s really difficult to achieve numbers like some of our competition… Dragon Age, the Skyrim franchise and whatnot.”

“Are we that much behind them in terms of the quality of the games? Of course we’ve got a lot to learn. We do know that, but I really do think that we can deliver a game of at least similar quality, if not better of course.

“Our target is to be better, always. We always had ambitions to be at the top level in terms of quality of build, but also to be independent. That’s very important for us.”

What do you think of the above. Is he being humble, or does The Witcher 3 really need to smash past Skyrim and Dragon Age sales to be considered a top-tier player? I’m guessing not, given how well regarded the series has become.

More Witcher 3 details - 50 hours long, features climbing, Fallout-style combat and boats

    - The world has 36 final states three possible epilogues (each one hour long)

    - You can import your save game to determine which characters appear and how they act towards Geralt, but the backstory won't be affected.

    - You can buy horses or tame a wild ones by using Axii, one of The Witcher's spells.

    - Geralt can now jump and climb things.

    - You can hunt wild animals for their fur, claws and so forth by tracking down colour-coded traces in the world itself.

    - The main storyline is 50 hours long.

    - Towns are more reactive - citizens will summon the guards if they catch you thieving, and will observe daily routines.

    - There's a new combat mechanic that's comparable to VATS in Fallout 3, letting you target different parts of your quarry in slow motion.

    - There are no more QTEs. Hurrah!

    - Geralt can level up to 60.

    - The console versions have their own, bespoke UIs.

    - You gain experience points only by completing quests, but hunting will earn you money and crafting materials.

    - There are two new minigames: axe-throwing and cards.

    - The economy is affected by your actions. Trade away loads of one type of good in a particular area, and prices will fall.

    - There's a day-night cycle, as before, plus a new weather system that partly determines which areas can be accessed and where/when monsters appear.

    - You can set things on fire using the Ignii spell, now a jet of flame rather than a single blast, and toy with the environment in other, unspecified ways.

    - You can ride around in boats.

    - Geralt will get to explore the world's capital Novigrad, the Skellige Islands, and "the war-ravaged wasteland".

Witcher 3 combat to lean towards “the tactics side”

Speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, marketing executive Michał Platkow-Gilewski copped to problems with the previous games’ combat, which didn’t elegantly communicate what is apparent in the books the series is based on.

“What we wanted to do with Witcher combat is that we wanted to show how Geralt uses the sword. He’s the master of the sword. Geralt’s true mastery comes out in the crowd fights, where can take on five or six enemies on his own,” he said.

“What happened in Witcher 2 is that people were telling us that the combat was just a little bit too arcade. The rules were a bit too arcade, to be honest. What we decided is to go a bit more over to the tactics side, to give you the feeling of having absolute control over the battlefield. That’s what we aimed for.”

Platkow-Gilewski said one of the ways CD Projekt RED has addressed its ambition is be improving the camera.

“We’ll always show the fights from the right angle or perspective or distance so that you’ll be aware of all the enemies around you. If they communicate among themselves and decide that it’ll be a good idea to surround you, you’ll see everyone who’s going around behind you,” he said.

“There won’t be any situation where someone attacks you and you won’t know what’s happening. The enemies will move around you and you will move as well, but it’s not wild and frantic. It’s a slow walk, like a slow dance. With swords. For all the enemies, we’re using real fighting techniques, many valid techniques. We have a few experts on our team, and we’ll be using stuntmen with huge experience for that as well. But Geralt’s fighting technique, it’s like sword dancing. He’ll have cool movements that you wouldn’t see in a real fight.”

A colleague pointed out that geralt will never do anything “over the top”, like somersaulting.

“But he’s different. He’s faster and stronger than anyone else, so his fighting technique is different,” Platkow-Gilewski concluded.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is expected in 2014 on PC, PlayStation 4 and some other next-gen console we still have to pretend doesn’t exist.

Witcher 3 long term support plans include “completely new mechanisms” – report

CD Projekt RED plans to continue supporting The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt through 2016 at least, and to provide much more than a few big fixes and some story DLC.

The developer published a Polish-language break down of what it expects from the next few years, kindly translated be members of the Witcher forums.

The roadmap makes reference to “long-term Witcher 3 support involving completely new mechanisms”.

Interestingly, CD Projekt Red expects to release “two smaller (about 20 hours of gameplay) but top-quality games supporting one of the product lines”, and a “cross-platform mobile game based on one of CDPR’s brands”.

If that weren’t enough projects for a few short years, the publisher will open a US branch focused on marketing and PR; begin licensing its REDengine; and launch Cyberpunk 2077. Full details below.

    2013

-open REDkit beta and further support of the modding community
-premiere of the first non-computer game set in the Witcher world
-launch of a local branch of CD Projekt RED in the United States, focused on marketing and PR for both Americas, especially the US

    2014-2016

-launch of The Witcher 3 for at least three strong platforms including PC and PS4
    -launch of Cyberpunk 2077
-two smaller (about 20 hours of gameplay) but top-quality games supporting one of the product lines
-a cross-platform mobile game based on one of CDPR’s brands
-start of license sales for REDengine
-long-term Witcher 3 support involving completely new mechanisms
-launch of the full version of the REDkit and further modding community support
-launch of further local CDPR branches in key territories

    Thanks, Blue’s News.

Witcher 3 is DRM-free, CD Projekt RED confirms

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt RED has confirmed its open-world RPG will be DRM-free. Game designer Maciej Szczesnik has stated that if pirates want to crack the game then they will any way.

Speaking with Kotaku, Szczesnik said, “We are trying to get rid of DRM. If someone wants to pirate a game, eventually he will.”

Managing director Adam Badowski continued, “Which is bad, of course. But you can’t do anything about it, so. We want to give the best user experience possible. When we removed DRM, people on those torrents were actually asking people not to download our game, because we [weren't using DRM].”

Bam. There you have it. What do you think?

    Thanks Gamespot.

The Witcher 3 will abandon QTEs; DRM still off the cards

Two very contentious little abbreviations – QTE and DRM – will have no bearing on The Witcher 3. That’s according to CD Projekt RED project lead Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who confirmed with Forbes that the team is finally doing away with the former. On why they appear in The Witcher 1 and 2, Tomaszkiewicz said he thought they turned “a cutscene into something more interactive,” but fan feedback has him convinced they should be eschewed altogether.

“In my opinion [QTEs] didn’t fit this type of gaming experience and usually frustrated players,” he said. “There is a small number of games where it is fun, like, for example, in the Uncharted series, where you don’t even realise that you’ve just finished a QTE sequence.”

Tomaszkiewicz also reaffirmed the studio’s anti-DRM policy. “DRM is the worst thing in the gaming industry,” he said. “It’s limiting our rights to play games owned by us. Let’s imagine that you have a game that requires internet connection to prove that you actually bought it. What if you lose your connection because of your internet provider? You can’t play anymore.

“I believe that as long as people feel that companies are cheating them by selling games they cannot play freely, limiting their rights, and making unfair DRM, then they will fight against that.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt information escapes from July issue of Edge

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is on the cover of the July issue of Edge Magazine, and one lucky NeoGAF user has given the Internet a summary of what the Witcher 3 feature contains.

According to the poster, the game will not contain a tutorial, as the developer have opted instead to introduce game and battle mechanics gradually. Geralt can now dodge which is closer to the “pirouettes” he pulls off in the books. He can also jump this time out.

He can also change his stance when it battle or when he is prepping for battle, such as when surrounded by monsters. Geralt will also make use of something called Witcher Sense – which the reader described as being similar to Batman’s detective mode.

This will allow Geralt to see weak spots on monsters – such as the Fiend shown in the magazine. He can also use this sense to outside of battles to re-create event when he needs to track a murderer for instance.

Players can also choose whether to spare to execute bandits, but whatever choice is made, they can still be looted, and there are no “fetch quests” this time out.

Like previously stated before, the magazine also mentions that choice and consequence will impact the entire game world, and the main story will run somewhere around the 50 hours mark. It will be another 50 hours long when you do all the other quests.

The team is also targeting 30fps on consoles.

According to the GAF poster, Edge was shown a demo of the game running in DX9, but the screenshots posted in the magazine came from the DX11 tech demo.

We won’t post the scans here, but you can see them over on AGB if you like.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is slated for a 2014 release on PC, PS4 and “other high-end consoles.”
