They found it was present at a high rate in horses bred for harness racing. In fact, all American Standardbred trotters had two copies of the mutation (the presence of only a single copy appears to have no effect, meaning the mutation is recessive).
A more interesting natural experiment occurred in the population of Swedish harness racers. And here, the mutation's presence was correlated with something you don't often see measured in a genetics paper: money. The mutation was linked to higher race performance, breeding values, and increased prize earnings over a horse's career.
