    Large, old trees disappearing worldwide
Largest trees provide distinct ecosystem services.

Large old trees are rapidly declining in many parts of the world, which has big implications for ecosystems and biodiversity. The new study, published in the journal Science, finds that the loss of large old trees in many areas around the world poses a threat to ecosystem integrity.

Corvids: The Birds Who Think Like Humans
    ...
I had heard that these creatures, part of a larger family of birds called corvids, were among the smartest animals in the world. If they were that intelligent, I wanted to meet them. How could I get those awesome animals to come visit me? I decided to find out.
Six months later, I have made friends with about seven crows and two small, brightly-colored corvids called scrub jays — one of whom eats out of my hand.

Bats evolved to fix DNA from damage caused by flight
High metabolic demands of flight create oxygen radicals that damage DNA.
    ...
Bats are some of the most distinctive mammals around. The only ones capable of powered flight, bat species occupy a variety of ecological niches, from predator to pollinator. The different habits come with some significant specializations, like echolocation and the ability to hibernate through cold weather.

Part of the reason that bats have evolved such extensive specializations is that they've been around for a while—fossil evidence dates back over 50 million years. But now, thanks to our ability to sequence genomes, some researchers have provided a new picture of how bats manage to adapt to such distinctive lifestyles. The DNA sequences suggest that all bats share some adaptations that help them cope with the metabolic demands of flight, while individual species have other adaptations that help them handle echolocation and hibernation.

Colony of 9,000 penguins discovered in Antarctica

Until last month, this group of 9,000 Emperor penguins had never seen a human being before. And no human knew about their existence either — until a satellite picked up images of their poop from space.

Pike chokes to death on fish almost its own size, is an idiot

The fish was found by Rene Spaargaren in the waters near his Dutch home. More accurately, he didn't discover this one fish, but rather two — inside the dead pike's mouth was a zander of almost equal size, which the pike had been futilely attempting to swallow. According to Spaargaren, the pike measured just over three feet, while the zander was about two and a half feet long. And yet, for reasons probably not even known to the now dead pike, the pike still tried to devour the zander in a single bite.

“Elephant taunting” is now a thing in India

Environmentalist website Conservation India is reporting on the rise of a new and disturbing spectator sport that has emerged in south India's Coimbatore forests. It's the practice of "elephant taunting," a bizarre and incredibly dangerous activity in which onlookers harass elephants to the point of retaliation. The activity has likely contributed to the dramatic rise in Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) over the past couple of years, prompting locals and environmentalists to call upon the authorities to put a stop to the ridiculous practice.

If more advanced alien civilizations are observing us in secret, they must be doing it strictly for the lolz by now. Either that or they're addicted to their equivalent of facepalming.

Domestic cats are destroying the planet

They have been called one of the "worst" invasive species. And a new study published today in Nature Communications suggests that cats are responsible for killing several endangered bird species in the United States, and decimating bird populations on islands all over the world. In the US, cats kill as many as 3.7 billion native birds annually, making them a bigger threat to these creatures than buildings, towers, windows, poison, and cars. But there is a solution to the problem.

How do owls twist their heads all the way around without dying? At last we know.

Finally, a collaboration between medical illustrators and neurological imaging experts has yielded the answer — and it has to do with the owls' remarkable bone structure and vascular network.

Governments ban drug, eliminate toxic corpses to save a vulture population
One agricultural drug led to unusual vultures deaths and human health threats.

The problem started with an anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac, that was being mass-produced after the patents on it had expired. It found widespread use in veterinary settings in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. From there, it made its way to the vultures. These birds normally scavenge a large number of cow carcasses that would otherwise end up rotting in the open. Unfortunately, as the drug ended up building up in the vultures, it caused fatal kidney toxicity. Populations of some species plunged to one percent of their historic levels—and the bodies of dead cattle began festering in the countryside.
