How much bandwidth do we need?
Some of the best numbers we have on bandwidth usage come from Cisco's Visual Networking Index, which shows that worldwide IP (Internet protocol) traffic hit 20.2 exabytes per month in 2010, and 242 exabytes per year.
An exabyte is, well, really huge, comprising 1,000 petabytes, while a single petabyte is 1,000 terabytes… and one terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes.

Analyst: China Has Backdoors to the World’s Telecoms
According to a report from a former Pentagon analyst, the Chinese government has access to about 80% of all the communications in the world and is working on gaining access to the remaining 20%. Two Chinese telecommunications companies operating around the globe are working closely with the Chinese government to provide proprietary information according to the report.
The Chinese government reportedly has "pervasive access" to some 80 percent of the world's communications, thanks to backdoors it has ordered to be installed in devices made by Huawei and ZTE Corporation.

O ipv4 é que já foi esgotado.
Para breve teremos o ipv6 e mais controlo sobre a internet. Penso que vai mudar muita coisa, inclusive o controlo a nível aplicacional.

O IPv4 ainda não foi esgota por assim dizer.
Ainda existem muitos IPv4 nas mãos das companhias ocidentais.
O que a maioria dos users não compreende, é que o IPv6 é end-to-end, ou seja, a compatibilidade entre o cliente e servidor tem que ser total (IPv6 cliente <-> IPv6 servidor, e routers que suportem IPv6 pelo meio) para o funcionamento correcto, o que obviamente não acontece hoje em dia. O que está a acontecer em alguns países (Ásia, pois tiveram menos acesso a IPv4) é ter o chamado CGN (Carrier Grade NAT), que é basicamente NAT a nível do ISP (para traduzir IPv6 para IPv4, de maneira a que esses users tenham acesso total à internet), mas algumas aplicações não se dão muito bem com isso, além do mais de requerer um elevado poder de processamento, e adicionar latências desnecessárias.
Imagina, o teu site está assigned um endereço IP público (IPv4/82.102.9.102). Se não tens IPv6, nenhum user a usar IPv6 nativo poderá chegar ao teu site sem translation . O mesmo pode acontecer se algum Edge device ou mesmo outro não suporte IPv6, não faz forward ao pedido.
A nível aplicacional estás a falar a nível de segurança? Se sim, vai mudar, e muito. O IPv6 é uma dor de cabeça. Em primeiro lugar não há NAT, logo aí temos um grande problema, tanto a nível doméstico como empresarial. Em segundo lugar a nível de IDS/UTM, o suporte IPv6 é quase nulo ou está lá para a fotografia. Em terceiro lugar, o IPv6 ainda não foi testado "a sério" a nível empresarial. Sim eu não considero o IPv6 day um teste. Considero um teste sério um ambiente 100% IPv6 em empresas de média dimensão durante um longo período de tempo.
