Goodbye, net neutrality—Ajit Pai’s FCC votes to allow blocking and throttling
But pro-net neutrality groups will sue FCC to reinstate consumer protections.

The Environmental Cost of Internet Porn

Scientists who analyze the environmental impact of the internet tout the benefits of "dematerialization," in that streaming eliminates physical materials such as discs and cases, but there may be a major exception: porn. Some believe that digitization has increased the overall consumption of porn so much that the principal of dematerialization gets flipped on its head.

Net Giants "Must Pay for News" from Which They Make Billions

Nine European press agencies want to make Facebook, Google, Twitter and other major players pay for the millions of news articles they use or link to. "Facebook has become the biggest media in the world," the agencies said in a plea published in the French daily Le Monde. "Yet neither Facebook nor Google have a newsroom."

A Plan to Rescue the Web from the Internet

Programmer Andre Saltz had advised that the Web began dying in 2014, as Google and Facebook were essentially influencing over 70% of traffic. He now suggests that we save it with peer-to-peer technology, which could replace HTTP and make the Web a content-centered cyberspace.

We need to realize that the Web can be independent from the Internet. The core weaknesses of the Internet have to be recognized, and how exactly they were exploited by middlemen businesses. The problem we are solving is both social and technical, so the solution must be a harmony of these two. Finally, all the tools and opportunities we need to supersede them are already in our hands: smartphones, peer-to-peer protocols, and mesh networks.

Statistical Analysis of pr0n Viewership During a Nuclear Crisis

Four days ago Hawaiians were shaken to their core when a false warning of an inbound ballistic missile was announced. Fortunately the fine people at PornHub were there to console everyone after the announcement came out that it was a false alarm.

Twitter is brutally mocking the fake Black Panther assault stories
    ...
And over the weekend, Twitter saw a wave of posts from users claiming they were white filmgoers who were physically assaulted by black attendees at Black Panther screenings. Most of the scam posts claimed the attackers shouted some variant on “this film isn’t for you,” playing on viewers’ racial anxieties about the movie’s intended audience. In some cases, the tweets seemed to be a ploy for attention. One of the first users to go viral immediately began soliciting money via Patreon, though the Twitter account that posted the assault claim has since been suspended. In others, the intent seemed to be to stir up racial tensions or stoke social media users’ fears enough to keep them from seeing the movie.

All these tweets were instantly and easily debunked; reverse image lookup tools make it easy to trace how the pictures of the bleeding “victims” were taken from stock-footage sites, TV shows, or legitimate news stories about domestic assault or other real attacks. Twitter users begin rapidly vetting each new false assault claim, responding to the posters by revealing their image sources. Twitter has suspended some of the accounts posting false assault claims.

Twitter users have also fought back by satirizing the false assault claims.

How a Norwegian comment section turned chaos into order—with a simple quiz
SXSW: NRK’s dedicated tech team employs “open source” tactics to fight trolling.
    ...
NRKbeta took its own advice when a staffer's 2016 article about "pictures of young girls shared on a 'boys forum'" exploded with "shouting and poor discussion" in the comment section. These posts came from readers who don't traditionally visit the NRK's tech-specific subsite, Grut noticed, and his team members decided to write about the rare eruption by asking readers, "What can you learn from meeting the comments section from hell?"

Commenters offered a variety of ideas, which included everything from comment voting to more active moderation. The staff mulled over what they could implement that would be low cost and low impact to its community, and Grut had his own eureka moment while showering before biking to the office: why not a quiz? A WordPress plugin could force users to correctly answer a few multiple-choice questions before the page's comment field would appear. Once he got to the office, he and fellow staffers spent three hours building the plugin, which Grut reminded the crowd is wholly open source.

Facebook May Have Secret Plans to Build a Satellite-Based Internet

Public filings have revealed that a company called PointView Tech LLC is developing an experimental internet satellite capable of delivering data 10 times faster than SpaceX’s Starlink. Sources say that PointView is actually a subsidiary of Facebook, and it is all part of the company’s plan to sell even more ads.
