DRM in HTML5 is a victory for the open Web, not a defeat
W3C's decision to publish a DRM framework will keep the Web relevant and useful.
    ...
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the group that orchestrates the development of Web standards, has today published a Working Draft for Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), a framework that will allow the delivery of DRM-protected media through the browser without the use of plugins such as Flash or Silverlight.

EME does not specify any DRM scheme per se. Rather, it defines a set of APIs that allow JavaScript and HTML to interact with decryption/protection modules. These modules will tend to be platform-specific in one way or another and will contain the core DRM technology.

Mozilla-funded research casts doubt on ad model for the Global South

A new study conducted Caribou Digital and funded by Mozilla has shown that ad revenue models to pay for online content won’t be as effective for the Global South as it gets online. This is in part due to their low incomes and decreased ability to buy advertised goods. Furthermore, advertisers have to deal with the constraints on the user experience based on low-quality hardware, unreliable internet, and a lack of local content which means people engage differently with content and services.

The World May Be Headed For a Fragmented "Splinternet"

Countries around the world are passing laws regarding social media and search results. The growing issue is several of these country-specific laws are written so they must be enforced globally. Vivek Krishnamurthy, assistant director of Harvard Law School's Cyberlaw Clinic, goes into great detail on how these laws could end up sanitizing the internet.
This is a seriously disturbing trend. We covered when Germany passed the law that orders social media companies to delete hate speech within 24 hours or face a fine of $57 million. What I was not aware of is the dozens of other cases all over the world. This global overreach of national laws is a very real problem; a problem to where a dictator could potentially censor the internet globally if this precedent is set. The other outcome being the "World Wide Web" may become not so world wide.

A DRM standard has been approved for the web, and security researchers are worried
    ...
The new standard is called EME, or Encrypted Media Extensions, and it allows DRM systems to hook directly into your browser. That way, Netflix and other streaming video services can protect their shows and movies without making users install annoying, often insecure plugins like Flash or Silverlight. On that note, it’s a win. But in other ways, EME’s approval has a lot of people concerned.
Researchers and open web advocates worry that by approving this standard, W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium, is giving major browser developers and content providers too much power over what users and researchers can do.

Microsoft wants to close the rural broadband gap with TV white spaces

Microsoft wants to improve rural broadband access by using TV white spaces spectrum, and eliminate the gap across the US over the next five years. Currently, in many rural parts of America you have to rely on poor cable connections, radio-powered modems, or even satellite technology to get access to the internet. The speeds are usually not adequate enough to even stream Netflix episodes, let alone browse the web properly.

Unused TV white spaces operating in the 600 MHz frequency range will be repurposed for Microsoft's projects, and these frequencies have enough bandwidth to help deliver internet to thousands of homes.

Dutch Police Operated Hansa Dark Web Market Sting

We reported on Monday that the dark web's AlphaBay has been seized by the government. Also included in that was the seizure of the Hansa Market. There were a lot of questions surrounding the Hansa Market as it was not well known in tech circles. It turns out that the Hansa Market was a honeypot site set up by Dutch Police in order to lure in many of those that were buying and selling illegal goods on the AlphaBay site.

Publishers Are Making More Video, Whether You Want It or Not

Critics are calling the move "100 percent cynical" and out of sync with audience demand, but more and more news outlets are switching to video content for revenue: advertisers adore the format, as ads can be cleverly intertwined with other content in videos, making them difficult to tune out. Americans are expected to spend 81 minutes a day watching digital video in 2019, up from 61 minutes in 2015, according to projections by research firm eMarketer.

Tech companies declare war on hate speech—and conservatives are worried
In light of Charlottesville, Silicon Valley revisits its absolute approach to free speech.
    ...
Long after the development of the modern Web, free speech purists have traditionally drawn a sharp distinction between words and actions. As Prince put it in 2013, "a website is speech. It is not a bomb." But as the Internet becomes ever more deeply intertwined into our daily lives, that distinction doesn't always seem so clear-cut. Online mobs have found ways to cause serious offline harms: stealing and publishing private information, harassing employers and family members, flooding social media accounts with threats and vitriol, and so forth. Women, people of color, and the LGBTQA community often bear the brunt of these tactics.
Simultaneously, a shifting political climate has changed how people think about online hate speech.

Hollywood Blames Rotten Tomatoes for "Summer from Hell"

Hollywood has suffered its worst summer at the box office in more than a decade, with last weekend’s Labor Day haul being the lowest in nearly 20 years. Movie executives have decided to blame Rotten Tomatoes and its "Tomatometer" scores for the fiasco, which are sweeping the web: complainants say that the aggregator hacks off critical nuance and holds a loose definition of who qualifies as a critic, making their scores illegitimate.

In an absurdist plot twist, Rotten Tomatoes is owned by film companies. Fandango, a unit of NBCUniversal, which also owns Universal Pictures, has a 75 percent stake, with the balance held by Warner Bros. Fandango bought control from Warner last year for an undisclosed price. (All parties insist that Rotten Tomatoes operates independently.) Mr. Yanover said it was silly for studios to make Rotten Tomatoes a box office scapegoat.

The Pirate Bay hijacks visitors' CPU causing 100% spikes, everyone loses their ****
    ...
Perhaps in a twist of irony, popular magnet/torrenting site thepiratebay.se (TPB) has been discovered to hijack its visitors' CPU cycles and cause 100% spikes while visiting the site, due to a sneaky cryptocurrency mining script, embedded in the website's HTML.
    ...
TorrentFreak reached out to TPB and was told that "the miner is being tested for a short period (~24 hours) as a new way to generate revenue." And further noted that, if the test is successful it may go toward entirely replacing ads.

That seems cool and all, but if a test is generating 100% spikes of CPU usage, one has to wonder how useful it's going to be over standard ads.

W3C Abandons Consensus, Standardizes DRM with 58.4% Support

The World Wide Web Consortium has gone ahead with a DRM standard that conflicts with accessibility, security research, archiving, and competition: it’s called EME, and it allows DRM-protected content published online to be decoded by web browsers without the need for plugins thanks to loading content decryption modules. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has tendered their resignation from the W3C, as their objections fell on deaf ears.
