China Criticizes John Kerry's Comments on Internet Freedom, Brings Up Snowden Leaks

China doesn't think the U.S. should be commenting on the current state of China's Internet regulation considering that National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden broke into and leaked secret U.S. government information.

The US is an 'enemy of the internet'

Every year, Reporters Without Borders publishes a list of "Enemies of the Internet," designed to draw attention to countries that disrupt the freedom of information with propaganda, surveillance, and censorship. For the very first time, that list now includes the United States of America.

U.S. Wants to Reduce Tension Over Internet Net Neutrality

During the Net Mundial, a two-day meeting among international governments and companies, there will be a spirited debate about who controls the internet.
Last month, the U.S. Commerce Department confirmed it would give up the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), so an international effort will be necessary to help issue Web domains and URLs.
Moving forward, the U.S. government would like to see a “multi-stakeholder” system in which multiple governments, private sector representatives, and universities to step up and lend a hand.

Why Do Chinese URLs Use Numbers, Not Letters?

To a native English-speaker, remembering a long string of digits might seem harder than memorizing a word. But that's if you understand the word. For many Chinese, numbers are easier to remember than Latin characters. Sure, Chinese children learn the pinyin system that uses the Roman alphabet to spell out Mandarin words (for example, the word for "Internet," 网络, is spelled wangluo in pinyin). And yes, Arabic numerals (1-2-3) are technically just as much a foreign import as the Roman alphabet (A-B-C). But most Chinese are more familiar with numbers than letters, especially those who didn't go to college. To many, "Hotmail.com" might as well be Cyrillic.

The world reacts to the FCC's net neutrality vote
Reactions vary from outrage to cautious optimism

Today, the FCC voted to accept "Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet," a provisional set of rules meant to protect net neutrality. After weeks of discussion inside and outside the FCC, the commission has passed a proposal with a lot of wiggle room and put it up for public comment. People on both sides of the aisle are just as conflicted as you’d expect. There’s been a tremendous amount of debate over what "protecting net neutrality" actually means, but the truth is that things are really only getting started.

Changing TCP/IP would speed up the net

A team of Danish boffins have worked out that the Internet could be sped up by more than five times if there were some significant changes to TCP/IP. The researchers who hang out at Aalborg University say that a lot of the TCP/IP system needs to be junked in favour of something called “Random Linear Network Coding” (RLNC).

    I got destroyed at a web-surfing competition
No keys, no search, no going back

I knew the web surfing contest was going to be hard as soon as Dragan Espenschied, a digital conservator and artist, explained the premise. Race across the internet from point A to B using only a one-button mouse: no keyboard, no search, no URL bar, no back button. It sounded almost impossible, even for someone who spends all day online, and that was before I found out my competitors had been training.

49ers’ stadium Wi-Fi served 25,000 concurrent users, 2.13TB in all
Instant replay feature for phones will drive use even higher in regular season.

The San Francisco 49ers' heralded Wi-Fi network served its first NFL crowd in a preseason game on Sunday, and the team has now released statistics showing that it was able to serve lots of data to lots of fans, just as intended.

The 49ers’ plan to build the greatest stadium Wi-Fi network of all time

The San Francisco 49ers build stadium technology in Facebook's image.

"We offloaded 2.13 terabytes during the event," 49ers VP of Technology Dan Williams told Mobile Sports Report. The newly built Levi's Stadium has 68,500 seats and more than a third of attendees used the Wi-Fi network simultaneously.

"We peaked at 24,775 (roughly 38 percent of attendance) concurrent connections with an average of 16,862 (roughly 25 percent of attendance)," Williams said.

At kickoff, the system was serving up 2.3Gbps. During the second busiest moment, less than an hour later, the Wi-Fi network was distributing 1.7Gbps throughout the stadium. "We averaged more than 1Gbps for more than two hours," Williams said.

That data includes only Wi-Fi, though cellular performance was reported to be strong as well due to small antennas distributed throughout the building.

How a new HTML element will make the Web faster
Today, the average size of a webpage is 1.7MB—1MB from images—but change is afoot.
    ...
In 2010, Web developer Ethan Marcotte wrote a little article about something he called Responsive Web Design.
Marcotte suggested that with the proliferation of mobile devices and the pain of building dedicated M-dot sites, it might make more sense to embrace the inherently fluid nature of the Web. Instead, he argued, let's build websites that were flexible. Marcotte envisioned sites that used relative widths to fit any screen and worked well no matter what device was accessing it.

    ...
Talk soon moved to lower-level solutions, including a new HTML element that might somehow get around the image prefetching problems in a way that JavaScript never would. It was Bruce Lawson of Opera who first suggested that a new <picture> element might be in order. Though they did not know it at the time, a picture element had been proposed once before, but it never went anywhere.
    ...
On the face of it, it sounds like a doomed proposition. Why would developers fund a feature that will ultimately end up in a Web browser they otherwise have no control over? But something amazing happened. The campaign didn't just meet its goal, it went way over it. Web developers wanted Picture bad enough to spend their money on the cause.

Internet Caretaker ICANN To Escape US Control

I like how they make it sound like ICANN was being held captive and had to "escape" US control.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) chief Fadi Chehade expressed his confidence in the move during a press briefing at the opening of the nonprofit organization's meeting this week in Los Angeles. "ICANN is in a very solid, confident place today," Chehade said of its readiness for a 'post US-government role' in charge of the Internet addressing system.

This is what happens to viral art after it gets filtered through the web
    Everything is a remix

When an image or video goes viral on the internet, the original file oftentimes gets, well, abused as it gets passed along and reshared, resulting in the circulation of dozens of copies that suffer in quality. The result of this process — downloading files, uploading them, and repeating — is commonly referred to as compression artifcating.

Hungary wants to tax internet data transfers
The country, in a deficit, wants to make service providers pay per gigabyte

Late on Tuesday, the Hungarian government proposed a controversial way of dealing with a national budget deficit: taxing internet service providers for data transfers sent over the web. Under the new tax provisions, providers would pay 150 forints — the equivalent of about 62 cents — for every gigabyte of information transferred, a cost that could quickly add up.
