This month in 1991: The web spreads beyond CERN
Twenty-one years ago this month, physicists at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California installed the first web server outside of Europe. The move marked the beginning of the global reach of the World Wide Web, a key point in the history of digital communications.

Why the UN’s push to control the Internet isn’t over
An FCC Commissioner says recent ITU meeting "like the Star Wars bar scene."

In fact, several of the companies that sided with the US only ended up in that position because of an overreach on the part of Iran, according to one speaker at a Thursday CES panel. Ambassador David Gross, who was the US representative to the ITU for several years, said that Iran decided to "meddle in a well-cooked document," adding an unusual "human rights" proposal that suggested a human right to access telecommunications networks.

According to some Hungarian physicist with more time on his hands than the average internet user, every website on the internet is connected by 19 clicks or less.

First website ever goes back online on the open Web’s 20th birthday
CERN seeks to preserve first website at original URL and the first Web servers.

I’m still here: back online after a year without the internet

As my head uncluttered, my attention span expanded. In my first month or two, 10 pages of The Odyssey was a slog. Now I can read 100 pages in a sitting, or, if the prose is easy and I'm really enthralled, a few hundred.

I learned to appreciate an idea that can't be summed up in a blog post, but instead needs a novel-length exposition. By pulling away from the echo chamber of internet culture, I found my ideas branching out in new directions. I felt different, and a little eccentric, and I liked it.

Did government scientists really create a secret quantum internet?

No, not really. But for two years, researchers at Los Alamos National Labs have been working on something they call network-centric quantum communications — and this could usher in the next generation of hyper-secure, scalable, and affordable quantum cryptographic techniques. We spoke to the lead researcher to find out more.

Why YouTube buffers: The secret deals that make—and break—online video
When ISPs and video providers fight over money, Internet users suffer.

But behind the scenes, in negotiations that almost never become public, the world's biggest Internet providers and video services argue over how much one network should pay to connect to another. When these negotiations fail, users suffer. In other words, bad video performance is often caused not just by technology problems but also by business decisions made by the companies that control the Internet.
These business decisions involve "peering" agreements that Internet companies make to pass traffic from one to another and negotiations over caching services that store videos closer to people's homes so they can load faster in your browser. When Internet providers refuse to upgrade peering connections, traffic gets congested. When ISPs refuse to use the caching services offered by the likes of Google and Netflix, video has to travel farther across the Internet to get to its final destination—your living room.

    Rebuilding The Internet From Scratch

Good luck trying to rebuild the internet from scratch. Having said that, I sure wouldn't mind an "us" and "theirs" internet where we could leave all the undesirables (spammers, scammers, the NSA, etc.) behind.

The internet is neither neutral nor private, in case you were in any doubt. The US National Security Agency can reportedly collect nearly everything a user does on the net, while internet service providers (ISPs) move traffic according to business agreements, rather than what is best for its customers. So some people have decided to take matters into their own hands, and are building their own net from scratch.

Brazil Looks To Break Away From US-Centric Internet
I wonder how many other countries are planning on going this route?

Brazil plans to divorce itself from the U.S.-centric Internet over Washington's widespread online spying, a move that many experts fear will be a potentially dangerous first step toward fracturing a global network built with minimal interference by governments.

How much influence can the UN have over online spying?
“Brazil has 100 percent inconvenience, 0 percent security, and 0 percent privacy."
    ...
But Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves did just that in a Monday keynote address at a side event as part of the United Nations General Assembly, which is currently underway this week in New York. President Ilves said that while the Peace of Westphalia—which dictated that countries (mostly) respect each others’ sovereign boundaries—may have historically applied in physical space, this concept no longer applies when it comes to the online world.

“Cyberspace has no borders. Countries face the import of potentially disruptive liberal ideas of open societies,” he said. “The means of expression, transparency, and accountability empowered by a Google search, a YouTube video, or a tweet, and these are direct threats to a restrictive political system; the World Wide Web turns them into domestic threats to the regime.”

“We must choose between two paths—either we can change the nature of the Internet by acceding to a Westphalian regulatory structure of Internet governance, or we can change the world.”

Apogee: The one-man online game publisher of 1987

In the late 1980s, a Texan twenty-something named Scott Miller created a business model that would change the way people bought and sold products across the world. Miller called his masterpiece the Apogee model. Everyone else called it shareware. It made digital sales on the internet stupendously profitable and Miller a millionaire. The model and the man would revolutionize how we use the internet — before most of the world knew what the internet was.

Everything You Needed to Know About the Internet....In 1994

You guys hear about this "internet" thing people are talking about? No? Then this book should be helpful!
E-mail: "Never forget that electronic mail is like a postcard. Many people can read it easily without your ever knowing it. In other words, do not say anything in an e-mail message which you would not say in public."

Finding people to communicate with: "… telephone a good friend who has electronic mail and exchange e-mail addresses with him or her."

"Surfing" the Internet: "Surfing the Internet is a lot like channel surfing on your cable television. You have no idea what is on or even what you want to watch."
